BOAT DOCK REPAIR - Seattle, WA

Boat docks often need annual repairs to keep them in working condition. Here are some repair tips to keep your dock in working condition.
Treated lumber. If your boat dock wasn’t constructed using treated lumber, make sure to remove all un-treated lumber and replace it with water-treated lumber. This will extend the life of your dock and remove the need for major repairs down the road.
Sealant. Regularly seal with deck sealer. It's best to seal your dock at least once a year. If you can, remove your dock from the water, let it thoroughly dry, then seal it.
Repair Wooden Platforms. Marine putty works extremely well in patching holes in your platforms. If your platform is beyond repair, you may need to completely replacing it.
Maintain Metal Platforms. Metal pipes should regularly be treated with a rust-resistance substance, such as a commercial lubricant. If there are holes or rusting, you can remove these older areas and weld a new piece of metal to these rough spots.

DOCK CONSTRUCTION - SEATTLE,WA

Proper dock construction is important!

Boat dock builders can provide a number of functions including boat storage, boat access and a setting for near shore recreational activities. When a boat dock is properly constructed, it can remain in service for many years. There are many steps for a proper and safe dock development, suach as checking on the zoning and inspection requirements in your area and working on or near bodies of water that may require special permits from environmental agencies. Here are a few things to consider:
Type of dock? Will you need a fixed dock, floating dock or maybe a flexible dock?
Dock configuration?  Straight, L-shaped and T-shaped?
Materials?  Pressure treated wood.....metal?
Dock size?
Basic construction?
The products that you will be using to construct your dock will typically include either metal or plastic parts. Typically, plastic will hold up much better to the wear and tear of the elements and won’t absorb water like wood.

SEATTLE FUEL DOCKS - BOATING

FUEL DOCKS - BOATING IN SEATTLE

Similar to auto fuel, marine fuel comes in various grades, primarily mid-grade and high-grade octane, as well as diesel. The pricing of marine fuel at the dockside pump are similar to those at gas stations in many respects, although vastly different in others, such as how it is taxed and the state and federal environmental regulations governing its sale and storage in waterfront settings.
Usually, any markups reflect the overhead costs necessary to meet state and federal regulations, as well as pay for insurance, maintenance, dock helpers, and other costs of doing business during a shorter business season.
Your boat may be diesel power and you may have  paid more in the beginning but you will be saving on the on-going fuel costs over the same gasoline powered vessel. Diesel engines cost less to run than gas. It is been indicated that they are most efficient when run at 80% of maximum speed.

BOATING IN SEATTLE, WA - Best Boating

Taking a tour through a marina or boat yard and observing what boats look like after they're a few years old is worth the exercise prior to purchasing. You can determine the age can be easily from the hull number on the stern. How has the showroom finishes holding up in the real world. Has the gelcoat turned chalky?  Any changes in the custom graphics? Is the paint fading? Are there numerous plastics that are cracked, chipped or broken? The plastic trim and particularly window moldings should be of great importance to observe. Are they painted? Is the metal under the paint starting to corrode? How about the hardware...... quality stainless steel, or cheap cast aluminum that is badly corroding? Is some of the hardware painted and the paint starting to come off?

FUEL DOCKS - Seattle, Washington

Most Marinas and Boatyards recognize that the know how of boaters runs from the professional captain to the novice who only knows how to start the motor. Therefore, dispensing of fuel is an important operational task. To avoid a liability issue, the fuel dock attendant should hand the fuel nozzle to the responsible person on the boat and indicate the type of fuel that is going to be dispensed. The fuel dock attendant should receive a confirmation from the person on the boat regarding the type of fuel that they are receiving.
The fuel dock attendant should not advise anyone on the boat as to how or where to receive fuel on the boat.  This is also the reason for the exchange on the type of fuel being dispensed.  Those that are familiar with the different types of boats can tell the type of fuel they require just by looking at the boat. There are a few inboard power boats and particularly sailboats that you cannot tell by looking at them.

BOATING IN SEATTLE - MARINA DIRECTORY

      MARINA DIRECTORY - Seattle, Washington

You may be a longtime  Seattle, Washington boat owner....then you know that owning a boat is a costly proposition. Keeping the cost of your initial purchase and the long-term cost of ownership within your financial means is one of the critical factors of keeping the boating lifestyle pleasurable. Enjoying doesn't have to be a continual drain on your financial resources. If you're buying your first boat, or are making a considerable step up in size, ther are some important points that should be carefully considered.

It's a fact, boat builders are tending toward marketing fads that seem to sacrifice quality for appearance along with style over safety and function. It seems as though the trend is to subsistute design of fashion to lure the inexperienced into the latest stylistic offerings. Substiyuting style over substance can be a costly proposition when the trendy design is out of style and all that showroom glitz and gloss reacts to the effects of the harsh marine environment.

FUEL DOCK TIPS - Seattle, Washington

Here are a few tips regarding dockside fueling:

Instead of burning extra fuel, why not run on the bottom half of the fuel tanks?

Empty your holding tanks to reduce extra weight (water weighs eight pounds+ per gallon)

You might want to fuel up early in the day (underground fuel stoarge tanks increase the density...when the fuel warms, it expands)

Reduce vapors while pumping by pumping on low mode (many pumps will have a wire coil that returns the fumes backe to the storage tank)

You will be saving with diesel fuel over the same gasoline powered vessel. Diesel engines cost less to run than gas and they are most efficient when run at 80% of maximum speed.

Acceleration consumes the highest amount of fuel. Accelerating at a brisk pace instead of full hammer will reduce your fuel costs considerably.
